Halloween originated from the Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated on October 31st. The Celts believed this night marked the end of harvest and the beginning of winter, when the boundary between the living and the dead was thin. To protect themselves from wandering spirits, people lit bonfires and wore costumes.
As Christianity spread, Samhain merged with All Saints' Day, leading to the name "All Hallows' Eve," which became Halloween. In the 19th century, Irish immigrants brought these traditions to the U.S., where Halloween evolved into the festive holiday we know today, with trick-or-treating and costumes.
